A TEAM of Galashiels cyclists have raised an astonishing £3,500 after successfully completing the recent Mull Sportive. Aided by friends from Aberdeen, Boston(USA), Edinburgh and Selkirk, the 19-strong squad tackled either the 87-mile or 44-mile courses on the Inner Hebridean island and made sure they were well sponsored on the day. Leanne Haining, the organiser of the Pail Riders Charity Team, has chosen three charities close to her heart with the target of raising £5,000 this year. The Rowan Boland Trust, Breast Cancer Now and the John Muir Trust are all set to benefit from the fund-raising campaign and thanks to the Mull cycling weekend the target is already in sight. Leanne is also planning a baking stall, race night, concert and charity supper to ensure they reach the £5,000 goal. The 53-year-old mother-of-two - who completed the 87 miles course in an impressive six hours 55 minutes - said:"It is a beautiful place to go and if we were able to raise funds at the same time then all the better. "It was a tough course but all our team - from beginners to experienced riders - showed great commitment and spirit and all made it round on the day. "They all stuck to the task and while it was a great achievement to complete the course the real winners were the charities Rowan Boland Trust, Breat Cancer Now and John Muir Trust who are set to benefit. "We are all grateful to everyone who sponsored us or dropped cash into our collection buckets - it is really appreciated." As well as Leanne - a food and health nutritionist with NHS Borders - the Pail Riders Charity Team comprised Susanne Pugh, Theresa Gariepy, Andrew Haining, Dianne Manson, Laura Howie, Robin Murray, Neil Robertson, Joni Fairburn, Gillian McCrirrick, Sue Myatt, Lynne Sanderson, Vince Summers, Gail McLaren, John Parlett, Deirdre Moss, Trish Craig, Julie Bryce, Brenda Mitchell and Avril Scott.
