Rowan Boland Memorial Trust for giving them a helping hand

Gala Boxing Club's membership topped 150 last month - and one of its founders has thanked the Rowan Boland Memorial Trust for giving them a helping hand. The Trust gave the ever expanding club £750 towards the cost of training mats at their new home, the former United Reformed Church. Ettrick and Lauderdale also gave cash towards the new mats, which enable senior members and juniors - the latter numbering 54 - a safe environment to train in. Danny Kelly Senior, said: "The Trust's support gave us a massive helping hand. "We previously trained on the wooden floor of the church but the mats mean we now have a safe place to train the kids. "We celebrated our 100th adult member recently, which is fantastic when you consider we started the club just over 18 months ago with five guys and two punch bags in Tweedbank." The next focus for the club is the Novice Championship, where six boxers from the club have been entered. Senior training takes place on Mondays and Thursdays (ladies 6.30pm to 7.30pm and men 7.30pm to 8.30pm) with juniors on Fridays from 6.30pm to 7.30pm. Meanwhile, the Rowan Boland Memorial Trust's Starwalk takes place this Friday from Gala Cricket Club. The new six mile course is hoped will be popular with all ages. Registration is from 7pm and the walk begins at 8pm.
