Over £11,000 was handed out to young sports people and clubs in the Borders by the Rowan Boland Memorial Trust during the past year.

The charity's AGM heard that a total of 32 grants were handed out to individuals and clubs from 11 different sports and in 11 communities in the region The Trust received over £14,000 from events throughout the year such as its Masquerade Ball, Meigle Fun Run and sports dinner. And it also received almost £7,500 in donations. David Boland, who was re-elected as chairman, said: "The Trust thanks everyone who has donated money and attended an event during the last year. "The support is vital in allowing the Trust to continue to help young sportspeople in the Borders compete with the best in Scotland, UK and the world." The latest grants handed out include Galashiels Golf Club (£800), gymnast Lily Byres (£100), athlete Laura Munro (£200), swimmers Toby Douglas (£500) Ryan Brown (£500), and Lizzie Clelland (£200), trampolinist Ciara Donlevy (£1,000), hockey player Leia MacKinnon (£500), footballer Callum Anderson (£200) and cyclist Harris Mackie (£150). Meanwhile, Gala Angling Association and the family of the late Tom Hardy made a joint donation of £150 to the Trust.
